Kamala, Phuket, Thailand. New Years Resolution: Be a fake victim. Upper-class Dane named Morten Budtz Berthelsen opened up his 2013 by fabricating a bogus robbery incident to Thai Authorities in order to facilitate his insurance scam.

January 01, 2013. Rich kid Morten Budtz Berthelsen reported to police that he was robbed by a gang of five, during New Years Eve the night before. He claimed th incident happened after he had gone alone to a bar within the vicinity for the New Years countdown and then strolled along Kamala Beach during which five male thugs confronted him and threatened to beat him up if he refused to hand over his valuable belongings which included his wallet containing his Credit Card. The other items are an Omega watch, two gold bracelets, and an iPhone5, with an estimated total value of 144,750 bhat (Approx $4,383 USD). He claimed that soon after he gave them his wallet and the other aforementioned items, the gang threw him in the sea and fled.

Due to his lack of clarity, officers were suspicious of his claim and questioned him further but his concoction remained bogus as he delivered non-precise answers and kept his responses confusing. So police investigated further, checking CCTV stills and footage. They discovered that at the time the robbery incident was reported to have happened, Morten Berthelsen was at the hotel's front desk conversing with hotel staff, after which he went back to his room with a foreign female, while still wearing the purportedly robbed Omega watch.

With the new evidences, the Dane fictim was invited by police for a follow-up interview. When officers showed him the evidences, Morten Berthelsen confessed that he concocted the hoax in order to obtain a police report for a false insurance claim back in Denmark.

“This may not seem like a big story,” said Police Lt Col “But if we had not been able to prove that what he said was a lie, it could have badly damaged the island’s tourism image,” ThePuhketNews reports.

January 03, 2013. Phuket Provincial Court. 18 year-old Morten Budtz Berthelsen appeared in court to plead guilty to a charge of filing a false police report. He was fined 500 baht and handed down a two-year suspended jail sentence. No consequences for his actions as he was considered inches away from being an absolute minor.

Spared the pokey, Morty with a $2,876 Omega watch around his wrist is not your average farang fictim. Reports suggest he is the son of a senior executive of the largest provider of cakes and biscuits in Denmark, which should make you wonder why he thought it was necessary to pull-off an insurance scam. Hold that thought!
